A magical ride

I’ve always thought I lived in a beautiful place. This weekend I got to see that beauty from a very unique vantage point. A coworker of mine at my “day job” arranged for us to go on a hot air balloon ride.

To be truthful I will say that it wasn’t exactly a bucket list thing or something I’d ever given much thought to doing. My best friend is from Albuquerque, New Mexico, a place famous for their hot air balloon festival. I’ve always thoughts the balloons were beautiful, but really that’s about as far as I’d ever taken the idea.

Having now flown in a hot air balloon, I have an entirely different outlook. It was truly one of the most amazing and magical experiences. As I said earlier, I’ve always thought I lived in a lovely county, but seeing it from high above the trees gave me a whole new appreciation for Yadkin County.

The sensation of floating above the world in the balloon in nearly indescribable. After the sound of the gas is quieted there is a silence like no other. Far below us lay the lush green forests, a deep emerald green. In lighter shades of green were fields of soybeans, gold-tasseled corn and tobacco on the verge of turning a golden shade as well. We watched as several deer frolicked below us in a cornfield. The silver-tipped white clouds were reflected back to us in small farm ponds. On the horizon the sun shone brightly right at eye level. In the distance we could see the hazy blue line of the mountains, punctuated by the familiar sight of Pilot Mountain.

Once back on the ground I felt changed somehow. I am quite literally at a loss for words on how else to describe the experience other than the words magical and life-changing.

Quickie essential oil tips

Make magic | The Lush's Blush blogI’m really new to the world of essential oils so I’m always on the lookout for easy and uncomplicated ways to use them. I recently ordered some oils from Edens Garden and they smell fantastic! Along with my order they sent a brochure with 150 ways to use essential oils.

Check out at a guest post from Lady Danni all about essential oil safety!

I admit reading through it at first I felt overwhelmed. There are so many uses for essential oils, it’s hard to know where to start.

I’m normally a pretty laid-back, easy going person, but I have been experiencing some stress these last few weeks which has been causing me some neck and shoulder pain. The first thing I was looking at for my essential oil use, was a way to combat stress.

One of the oils I ordered was a blend called Stress Relief. This citrus-forward scent is very uplifting and calming. It is a combination of bergamont, blood orange, grapefruit, patchouli and ylang ylang. In a 5 ml. bottle, I mixed four drops of this oil with a sweet almond carrier oil. I’ve been keeping the bottle in my pocket or purse and I dab a little on my hands and the back of my neck when I feel tension starting to creep in. My hands have been so dry lately, so this helps with that also. I’ve still been having pain occasionally, but not as intense and less often. I’m actually going to my first yoga class today, so I’m hoping that will help with my stress level as well.

The other oil creation I made over the weekend was a carpet refresher. My husband and I finally had to break down and a buy a new vacuum cleaner. Ours had been on its last leg for a while. I was in the mood to do some really good cleaning since we finally had a properly working vacuum. After vacuuming the entire house, I used the tips from the Edens Garden booklet to make a carpet freshener from essential oils and baking soda. Here’s how:

Carpet Refresher

Combine two tablespoons baking soda with 20 drops of an essential oil like lavender or Edens Garden’s Uplift blend. I used a fork to stir the oil and baking soda together. It ends up being a tad chunky if you don’t stir it up good. I let mine sit for a few minutes after mixing it up. Next, sprinkle the mixture over the carpet and let it sit for 15 to 20 minutes. The smell can be quite intense (it gave my husband a headache) so go into another room if you can during this time. After 15 or 20 minutes, vacuum it all up! The house smelled so good after I did this.

In the living room I used 20 drops of Uplift. In our music/meditation room  I used 20 drops of lavender. In the bedroom I used 15 drops lavender, 3 drops clary sage and 2 drops palo santo oil.

Do you have a favorite essential oil tip or recipe? I’d love to try it. Leave me a note in the comments!

Favorite Things: Blue infinity scarf

New Blue Infinity Scarf from Folktale Jess

I’m pretty much obsessed with this new gorgeous blue flannel infinity scarf/wrap from my good friend Jessica’s wonderful Etsy shop.

It is so soft and comfy. You can wrap it all around yourself, even pull it up over your head like a hoodie, which is my favorite way to wear it.

I stay cold a lot in the winter so I tend to keep this on all day at the office and even while back at home snuggled up on the couch.

The fabric is soft, but also thin so it’s not heavy or bulky. She has a beautiful red one listed now in the shop as well as lots of other gorgeous goodies! Check her out!

It’s National Chocolate Cake Day

Serendipity Blackout Chocolate Cake | The Lush's Blush blog
Serendipity Blackout Chocolate Cake

I love how these random “days” just come about. I don’t know who decides on them. Can I suggest a few? National Mimosa Day? National Stay in Your PJs All Day? National Leave Work Early and Go to the Beach Day? National Drink Wine (or beverage of choice) at the Beach All Day Day? Clearly you can see where my mindset is today.

Alas today is none of the above, but rather it is National Chocolate Cake Day. Around the holidays, my sweet husband made two of the most amazing chocolate cakes EVER! Both recipes are from the Sweet Serendipity cookbook from the famous Serendipity 3 in New York City.

Both recipes are pretty involved, in fact my husband swears he’s never making anything out of the Sweet Serendipity cookbook every again. But they are amazing cakes, Mad King Ludwig’s Chocolate Cake we made for my dad and godmother’s birthday and the Blackout Chocolate Cake we made for Christmas Eve. Yum!

What is your favorite cake? Leave a note in the comments!

Favorite Things: The Velvet Lotus

My good friend Seja has an absolutely amazing crystal shop on Etsy. I’ve heard her refer to it before as her “little rock shop.” Well, let me tell you, The Velvet Lotus is so much more than just a rock shop. The Velvet Lotus is nothing but pure magic.

I have a number of crystals and other magical goodies from The Velvet Lotus and they are all so special to me.

White Atlantean Phantom Quartz

One of the most incredible things about The Velvet Lotus is the way each item is lovingly packaged. A lot of “woo woo” shops, if you will, package things very prettily in little organza bags etc., but Seja pulls out all the stops. Her packages are filled to the brim with the most fragrant and lovely flower potpourri and glitter. I love glitter. I love it!

I tried to do a live unboxing on Periscope of my latest order from The Velvet Lotus, but it was so amazing that I had to just stop because I couldn’t video and concentrate on all the loveliness I was seeing. You can watch those video’s here and here.

If you’re looking for a place to purchase some amazing magical tools, I highly recommend The Velvet Lotus!

Bacon in Key West

Just a quickie about one of our favorites places we visited in Key West while on our honeymoon. We love, love, loved this little bar called 2 Cents. During happy hour they give you free bacon. What more can I say? You also get to roll dice to see what kind of drink special you’ll get for Happy Hour.

If you’re ever in Key West, this is a must-do! They have delicious cocktails also!
